A comprehensive examination of food offerings marketed towards toddlers in numerous Texas grocery establishments has revealed a striking prevalence of ultra-processed items, with an overwhelming four out of every five products falling into this category. This finding is particularly significant as it emerges against a backdrop of ongoing discussions by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) concerning potential updates to regulations governing front-of-package nutrition labeling, health-related product claims, and the marketing of food to young children. Unlike many other developed nations, the United States currently does not mandate the inclusion of warning labels on products that exhibit elevated levels of sugar, sodium, or caloric content.
The implications of this nutritional landscape are underscored by the fact that a substantial portion, specifically 49%, of these examined toddler food products failed to meet at least one of the nutrient benchmark criteria established by the World Health Organization (WHO) through its Nutrition and Promotion Profile Model (NPPM), a framework designed for evaluating commercial foods intended for consumption by children between the ages of 6 and 36 months. Erin A. Hudson, JD, ASN Science Policy Fellow and a doctoral candidate at The University of Texas at Austin, articulated the critical disconnect between parental assumptions and market realities. "Many parents may reasonably assume that products found in the dedicated baby and toddler food sections of their local supermarkets are subject to stringent nutrient standards. Our findings starkly illustrate that approximately half of the toddler-specific food items readily available for purchase do not adhere to these benchmarks," Hudson stated. She further emphasized the burden this places on caregivers, adding, "Consequently, parents are compelled to exercise considerable vigilance in meticulously scrutinizing product labels and ingredient lists to ascertain the nutritional composition and the degree of processing inherent in the foods they select for their young children."
These impactful research findings were formally presented at NUTRITION 2026, the premier annual conference organized by the American Society for Nutrition, which convened from July 25th to 28th in National Harbor, Maryland, a locale situated in close proximity to the nation’s capital. The investigative work was conducted collaboratively by Hudson and Marissa Burgermaster, PhD, an assistant professor also affiliated with The University of Texas at Austin.
The foundational principles of nutrition established during the formative toddler years play a pivotal role in shaping an individual’s lifelong palate preferences and subsequent dietary habits throughout childhood, with potentially far-reaching consequences for long-term health trajectories. The pervasive issue of excessive sugar consumption warrants particular attention due to the well-documented adverse effects it has on young children. The analysis conducted by the research team specifically identified a significant correlation: ultra-processed toddler foods were demonstrably more likely to contain disproportionately high quantities of sugar when compared to products that had undergone a lesser degree of processing.
To facilitate this in-depth study, the researchers meticulously documented the visual presentation of baby and toddler food selections within the aisles of 21 distinct grocery stores located in Austin, Texas. Subsequently, they undertook a detailed assessment of the nutritional data pertaining to products explicitly marketed to children within the 6- to 36-month age bracket. It is important to note that the scope of this analysis deliberately excluded infant formula, beverages, and the rudimentary purees often introduced as a child’s initial food experiences.
In total, the research team undertook an evaluation of 2,783 distinct products. Employing the internationally recognized Nova classification system, which categorizes foods based on their degree of processing, the researchers rigorously classified an extensive 81% of these products as ultra-processed.
Beyond the sheer volume of ultra-processed items, the nutritional evaluation also illuminated several specific areas of concern. A notable 17% of the products examined failed to meet the WHO’s recommended intake levels for sugar. Furthermore, 25% of the products exceeded the recommended threshold for sodium content, while 11% fell short of the standard for adequate fat content, and 12% did not achieve the recommended level for energy density. The specific product categories that were found to transgress these established guidelines included items such as fruit pouches, which were frequently high in sugar; oat bars, often laden with sugar and excess calories; mac and cheese, typically high in sodium and fat; turkey sticks, another category frequently exceeding sodium and fat limits; cheese puffs, which tended to be calorie-dense; and peanut butter puffs, often found to be high in sodium, fat, and calories.
It is a crucial distinction that not all sources of fat and calories contribute equally to a food’s nutritional profile. Prior research has consistently indicated a link between ultra-processed foods and adverse health outcomes, even when accounting for their fundamental nutritional composition. However, the precise biological mechanisms or specific components within these highly processed foods that might be responsible for these observed associations remain an active area of scientific inquiry.
The researchers involved in this study also stressed an important nuance: elevated levels of fat or calories do not inherently signify a lower nutritional quality. Indeed, certain less-processed foods may naturally contain higher concentrations of fat and calories due to the inclusion of nutrient-dense whole-food ingredients, such as peanuts or beef, which offer a wealth of beneficial nutrients. In contrast, ultra-processed toddler products were more inclined to incorporate substantial amounts of sugar without providing a commensurate level of essential nutritional benefits. According to the researchers, this critical difference lends significant support to the prevailing recommendations for parents to limit the overall consumption of ultra-processed foods by their toddlers.
"During these profoundly formative early years of development, the vast majority of parents are actively striving to provide their children with nutritious meals. However, they may find themselves facing considerable challenges in achieving this goal due to the nature of the toddler food products readily available in their local grocery stores," Hudson commented. She further suggested a potential solution: "The implementation of warning labels on products that exceed established nutrient thresholds could serve as an invaluable aid to parents navigating the complex landscape of toddler food options. Moreover, such labeling might also provide a powerful incentive for manufacturers to undertake product reformulation, leading to healthier offerings."
The scope of this particular study was confined to packaged foods displayed on the shelves of retail grocery outlets. As such, it may not fully encompass the complete spectrum of foods that parents ultimately provide to their toddlers within the home environment.
Hudson delivered her comprehensive findings on Sunday, July 26th, during the "Ultra-Processed Foods: Methodological Advancements Oral Session," which took place at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center. The presentation was delivered in abstract form.
It is important to note that abstracts presented at NUTRITION 2026 undergo a review and selection process by a committee of expert specialists. However, these presentations generally have not yet completed the rigorous peer-review process that is a prerequisite for research published in established scientific journals. Therefore, the findings presented should be considered preliminary until they are formally published in a peer-reviewed academic publication.
