Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director-General of the WHO, expressed deep personal and institutional grief upon hearing the news. In a statement reflecting widespread sentiment, Dr. Tedros lauded Dr. Nabarro as a "dear friend, colleague, and WHO Envoy," highlighting his immense contributions as a "great champion of global health and health equity." He further underscored Nabarro’s role as a "wise, generous mentor to countless individuals," whose impactful work resonated across the globe. On behalf of the entire organization, Dr. Tedros extended heartfelt condolences to Dr. Nabarro’s family, friends, and collaborators, acknowledging the irreplaceable void left by his expertise, wisdom, and kindness.
Dr. Nabarro’s expansive career trajectory showcased his remarkable versatility and capacity to contribute across diverse sectors, including health, nutrition, and the increasingly critical domain of climate change. His early leadership roles within the WHO laid the groundwork for his future global impact. Between 1999 and 2005, he assumed pivotal executive positions, initially overseeing the ambitious Roll Back Malaria Project. This initiative was a major international effort aimed at significantly reducing the global burden of malaria, a disease that continues to devastate communities, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. Dr. Nabarro’s tenure saw a renewed focus on coordinated strategies encompassing prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, working to mobilize global resources against this persistent killer. Following this, he was appointed as the Director-General’s Special Representative for Health Action in Crises, a role that saw him navigating complex humanitarian emergencies and ensuring health services reached vulnerable populations amidst conflict and disaster. This experience honed his skills in rapid response and strategic coordination, which would prove invaluable in later assignments.
His career then transitioned to the United Nations system, where his influence expanded exponentially across a spectrum of global challenges. From 2005 to 2014, Dr. Nabarro served as the UN System Senior Coordinator for Avian and Pandemic Influenza. This period was marked by heightened international concern over the H5N1 avian influenza virus, which posed a significant threat of a human pandemic. His role involved orchestrating a cohesive global response, enhancing surveillance, preparedness, and communication strategies across numerous countries and international bodies, effectively bolstering the world’s defenses against potential widespread outbreaks.
Concurrently, from 2008 to 2014, he took on the critical responsibility of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Food Security and Nutrition. During this time, the global community faced persistent issues of malnutrition, stunting, and food insecurity affecting millions, especially children. Dr. Nabarro’s leadership was instrumental in elevating these issues on the international agenda. His advocacy culminated in his role as Coordinator of the Movement for Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) from 2011 to 2014, where he served as an Assistant Secretary-General. The SUN Movement, under his guidance, became a global partnership uniting governments, civil society, businesses, and donors in a concerted effort to end malnutrition in all its forms, emphasizing a multi-sectoral approach to improve nutritional outcomes for mothers and children.
Perhaps one of his most recognized and impactful assignments came between 2014 and 2015, when he was appointed the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the West Africa Ebola Outbreak Response. The Ebola epidemic in West Africa represented an unprecedented public health crisis, overwhelming national health systems and threatening regional stability. Dr. Nabarro’s decisive leadership was crucial in galvanizing and coordinating the international response, streamlining efforts from diverse agencies and governments to contain the spread of the deadly virus, provide care, and rebuild affected communities. His ability to navigate complex political landscapes and mobilize resources in a rapidly evolving emergency showcased his exceptional crisis management capabilities.
Subsequently, from 2016 to 2017, he served as Special Adviser for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Climate Change, holding the rank of Under-Secretary-General. This role placed him at the heart of global efforts to implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity. Dr. Nabarro championed the integrated nature of the SDGs, emphasizing the interconnectedness of environmental protection, social equity, and economic development.
Beyond his direct UN appointments, Dr. Nabarro’s expertise was frequently sought for critical advisory roles. In 2015, the WHO Director-General entrusted him with chairing an expert group dedicated to reforming the organization’s approach to outbreaks and emergencies. This pivotal task aimed at strengthening WHO’s capacity for rapid, effective, and coordinated responses to future health crises, a reform initiative that gained even greater urgency in subsequent years.
His profound contributions to global nutrition were recognized with the prestigious World Food Prize in October 2018. This accolade celebrated his decades of leadership and advocacy, which significantly advanced the understanding and resolution of global food insecurity and malnutrition. The award underscored the long-term impact of his work on millions of lives, particularly his instrumental role in establishing and leading the SUN Movement.
In the later stages of his career, Dr. Nabarro continued his relentless pursuit of global betterment through academic and philanthropic endeavors. From mid-2019, he served as Co-Director and Chair of Global Health at the Institute of Global Health Innovation, Imperial College, London, a position he was slated to hold until 2025. Here, he continued to mentor students and researchers, fostering new ideas and approaches in the field of global health. In 2018, he co-founded the Swiss-based 4SD Foundation (Skills, Systems and Synergies for Sustainable Development) with Florence Lasbennes, serving as its Strategic Director. This foundation is dedicated to training and mentoring leaders to drive sustainable development, reflecting his enduring belief in empowering individuals to effect systemic change.
His commitment to transformative change extended to the critical area of food systems. Between 2018 and 2025, Dr. Nabarro curated the Food Systems Dialogues, a vital initiative that contributed significantly to the 2021 UN Food Systems Summit. Under his strategic leadership at 4SD, these dialogues fostered a global network of National Convenors committed to transforming food systems, a network that remains active and influential today in promoting healthier, more sustainable, and equitable food practices.
Dr. Nabarro was also a prominent voice in the global climate discourse. He contributed to the preparations for the UN’s September 2019 Climate Action Summit and co-facilitated the coalition that advanced the Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) workstream, an initiative co-led by China and New Zealand focused on harnessing nature’s power to address societal challenges. Furthermore, he co-chaired the forum on Climate Change and Health, which concluded its impactful work at the World Innovation Summit for Health in November 2020, emphasizing the critical linkages between environmental degradation and human well-being.
In March 2020, as the world grappled with the nascent stages of an unprecedented pandemic, Dr. Nabarro was once again called to serve, appointed as Special Envoy of the WHO Director-General on COVID-19. In this capacity, which he held until his passing, he provided crucial strategic guidance, advocating for evidence-based public health measures, equitable vaccine access, and a globally coordinated response to the unfolding crisis. His vast experience in pandemic preparedness and crisis management proved invaluable during this challenging period.
Even as global conflicts emerged, Dr. Nabarro remained engaged. When the war in Ukraine began, he joined the UN Secretary-General’s Food, Energy, and Finance crisis response group, co-leading the vital Food Workstream. This role saw him addressing the cascading impacts of the conflict on global food security, working to mitigate supply chain disruptions and prevent widespread hunger.
His lifelong dedication and extraordinary contributions to global health were formally recognized in 2023 when King Charles III bestowed upon him a knighthood, a testament to his profound and lasting impact.
The 4SD Foundation, in a statement titled “A Difficult Announcement,” confirmed his passing at home on July 25. The foundation highlighted his "generosity and unwavering commitment to improve the lives of others," affirming that he will be "sorely missed." Dr. Nabarro is survived by his beloved wife, Flo, his children Tom, Ollie, Polly, Josie, and Lucas, and seven grandchildren. His family, in a statement issued on July 30, expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of tributes and kindness. They voiced pride in seeing his legacy continue through "so many compassionate leaders working to shift systems from within," across the fields of international development, public health, food systems transformation, nutrition, and crisis response.
A small, private funeral service for close family members is scheduled for Monday, August 4. In the coming weeks, several memorial services will be organized, providing opportunities for the countless individuals whose lives Dr. Nabarro touched to pay their respects and celebrate his remarkable life and enduring contributions.
