This pivotal study, published in the esteemed journal Clinical Nutrition, meticulously tracked the progress of 99 adult participants grappling with overweight or obesity, with a substantial proportion being female. The findings underscore a compelling advantage for those who adhered to a daily eating window of eight hours, as they exhibited superior weight maintenance compared to individuals who continued with eating periods of twelve hours or more.
The core of this investigation delved into the widely adopted 16:8 intermittent fasting protocol, a regimen demanding a daily fasting period of sixteen hours, punctuated by an eight-hour window for food consumption. Intriguingly, the long-term success in preserving weight loss was not contingent upon the specific timing of this eight-hour eating period, whether it occurred earlier or later in the day. Participants were allocated to either an "early" schedule, consuming food between approximately 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., or a "late" schedule, with their eating window spanning from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. The results at the twelve-month follow-up were striking: both the early and late time-restricted eating groups reported maintaining significantly more of their initial weight loss in contrast to the control group, which reverted to their habitual eating patterns of twelve hours or longer daily. Furthermore, individuals who followed the earlier eating schedule also experienced a more pronounced reduction in their overall body fat mass. These outcomes strongly suggest that time-restricted eating, while a structured intervention for a defined period, can foster enduring physiological changes that extend far beyond the initial intervention phase, offering a practical approach to weight management.

During the initial twelve weeks of the study, all 99 participants benefited from comprehensive educational guidance focused on adopting a Mediterranean diet, a dietary pattern known for its health-promoting properties. Subsequently, these participants were strategically divided into four distinct groups. A control group was tasked with maintaining their customary daily eating habits, characterized by windows of twelve hours or more. The "early fasting" group was instructed to confine their food intake to an eight-hour period commencing before 10:00 a.m. Conversely, the "late fasting" group adhered to an eight-hour eating window that began after 1:00 p.m. A fourth group, the "self-selected" cohort, was granted the autonomy to determine their own eight-hour eating schedule. Comprehensive physiological assessments, including body weight, fat mass, and fat-free mass, were conducted at the outset of the intervention, immediately following its completion, and again a full year after the program’s cessation. This meticulous data collection allowed researchers to precisely track the trajectory of weight and body composition changes over an extended period.
The findings from this study build upon earlier research, with primary results from a broader project having been published in the prestigious journal Nature Medicine. Those earlier findings indicated that participants engaging in time-restricted eating (TRE) achieved an average weight loss that was three to four kilograms greater than individuals who received only nutritional guidance, irrespective of the specific timing of their eating window. This latest work, however, specifically examines the sustainability of those weight loss achievements.
Dr. Alba Camacho Cardeñosa, a distinguished researcher affiliated with the University Joint Institute for Sport and Health (iMUDS) at the University of Granada (UGR) and a postdoctoral fellow at ibs.GRANADA within the Endocrinology and Nutrition Department at San Cecilio University Clinical Hospital, served as the lead author of this study. She articulated the significance of their findings, stating, "To date, although we knew that intermittent fasting promotes modest weight loss in the short term, it was unclear whether its effects were sustained over time. By evaluating the participants 12 months after the intervention ended, we demonstrated that the changes in body weight persist."
