Current estimates indicate that approximately 6.7 million individuals in the United States are living with Alzheimer’s disease. This reality underscores the urgency of identifying modifiable risk factors that could potentially alter the course of cognitive decline. Emerging research consistently points towards cardiovascular health as a significant determinant in the brain’s aging process, with recent analyses suggesting that as many as 40% of Alzheimer’s cases might be linked to preventable or manageable factors.
A widely recognized framework for assessing cardiovascular health is the American Heart Association’s "Life’s Simple 7" (LS7) protocol. This comprehensive measure encompasses three behavioral components: maintaining a healthy diet, avoiding smoking, and engaging in regular physical activity. It also includes four health metrics: blood pressure control, healthy body mass index (BMI), optimal total cholesterol levels, and controlled fasting blood glucose. The LS7 framework is not only a tool for evaluating overall cardiovascular well-being but has also been posited as a beneficial strategy for supporting brain health. Prior investigations have established a clear correlation between adherence to the LS7 guidelines and superior cognitive performance, healthier brain structures, and a reduced incidence of dementia. However, the current study highlights that these relationships may not be uniformly applicable across diverse populations.
It is critical to acknowledge that Hispanic older adults bear a disproportionately high burden of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Statistics reveal that approximately 14% of Hispanic individuals aged 65 and older have Alzheimer’s, compared to 10% of their non-Hispanic white counterparts. Within the broader Hispanic community, Mexican Americans, who constitute the largest Hispanic subgroup in the United States, exhibit particularly elevated rates of conditions such as diabetes, obesity, and dyslipidemia – all established risk factors for increased dementia susceptibility. Despite these evident health disparities, Hispanic populations have historically been underrepresented in crucial Alzheimer’s research, a fact that the study authors readily acknowledge. SALSA focused its extensive data collection on chronic diseases, the dynamics of healthy aging, and the intricate processes through which older adults develop functional limitations. Crucially, participants in the SALSA study had previously been enrolled in the SAHS, creating a continuous data stream that allowed for in-depth longitudinal analysis. The researchers noted in their new study that the inclusion of both ethnic groups from a shared source population and geographical setting provides an unparalleled advantage for direct comparative analysis within a unified contextual framework, thereby strengthening the ability to pinpoint disparities in cognitive aging and their associated cardiovascular correlates.
To meticulously track cognitive changes over the extended period of the study, researchers evaluated the cardiovascular health of SAHS participants who subsequently enrolled in SALSA, utilizing their established LS7 scores. Cognitive ability was assessed at multiple junctures, with participants undergoing testing up to four times using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE).
