This groundbreaking research, conducted within a controlled laboratory setting, observed distinct patterns in how participants navigated tasks involving potential gains and losses based on their seated posture. Those who adopted an upright stance reported experiencing more favorable emotional states and demonstrated enhanced performance in a simulated risk-reward scenario when contrasted with individuals who adopted a slumped or neutral posture.
While the observed effects were characterized as modest and confined to the experimental environment, the findings contribute significant new empirical support to the hypothesis that physical positioning can exert an influence on both mood and behavioral tendencies, according to Jorge Armony, a distinguished professor within McGill’s Departments of Psychiatry and Psychology and the senior author of the study. This line of inquiry delves into a long-standing debate among scientists regarding the extent to which somatic configurations can genuinely shape cognitive and emotional processes.
The research endeavor was spearheaded by graduate student Soren Wainio-Theberge, who conceived of the initial research premise and served as a coauthor on the published paper. The investigative team successfully recruited a cohort of nearly 200 individuals from the broader McGill academic community to participate in their sophisticated study.
Participants were initially subjected to a series of assessments administered via a computer monitor. Subsequently, they were directed to engage in a different task presented on a tablet device, with the explicit understanding that the researchers were primarily focused on evaluating the usability and functionality of a novel mobile application. Conversely, in a separate group, the tablet was positioned flat on a desk set at a considerably lower elevation, a setup that inadvertently encouraged participants to lean forward and adopt a more hunched posture. Complementing these behavioral findings, responses to a post-experiment questionnaire revealed a significant difference in self-reported emotional states. Participants who maintained an upright posture reported experiencing significantly stronger feelings of pride, an emotion intrinsically linked to a more positive and confident mood. This emotional correlation further strengthens the hypothesized link between posture, mood, and decision-making.
The experimental design was specifically crafted to address several methodological shortcomings identified in preceding studies investigating the posture-mood connection. Rather than issuing direct commands regarding how individuals should sit, the research team strategically manipulated the physical environment. This indirect method of postural influence aimed to circumvent a primary critique leveled against earlier "power pose" research, which posited that participants might alter their behavior simply because they had inferred the researchers’ expectations.
During debriefing interviews conducted after the experiment, the overwhelming majority of participants indicated that they had not perceived any intentional manipulation of their posture. This blind approach to posture alteration was crucial for ensuring the ecological validity of the findings.
To objectively validate the efficacy of the environmental manipulations in inducing the intended postures, the research team employed sophisticated video analysis software.
